Col. Oliver North speaks at the 2012 CPAC in Washington, D.C.

The president of the National Rifle Association is speaking at Murray State University the night before one of the state’s largest political events this summer, but organizers of the August 4th Fancy Farm Picnic are unsure if he will make an appearance at their event.

The Marshall County Republican Party invited Oliver North to speak at a GOP rally on August 3. Picnic Organizer Mark Wilson says the events are separate, but he’s open to the possibility of North coming to the picnic.

“We’re always to ideas," he says. "You never know ‘till the first Saturday of August who’s going to be on the roster.”

Wilson says organizers have so far sent invites to their traditional list of office holders and candidates. The annual picnic is a fundraiser for St. Jerome Catholic Church, where the event is held. Father Darrell Venters says guns are not allowed on church property with the exception of law enforcement.

This year marks the 138th Fancy Farm Picnic.
