A Dayton man is being sentenced to 15 years in prison and 25 years of supervised release for attempting to join the Islamic State, or ISIS.Laith Waleed Alebbini, 28, was convicted in December 2018 in U.S. District Court on charges of attempting and conspiring to join ISIS.
"Alebbini was prepared to kill soldiers and citizens of the United States, the Kingdom of Jordan and coalition partners fighting against ISIS," says U.S. Attorney Ben Glassman in a statement. "Indeed, Alebbini was prepared to kill any person who did not accept ISIS as the Islamic Caliphate. Prison is the right place for him."
Alebbini was arrested in April 2017 at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. Authorities said he was planning to fly to Syria and provide himself as an ISIS recruit.
