I love that the album cover for ShowYrTeeth shows a person immersed in a bathtub of glittering sludge inside a dilapidated room that looks like an abandoned industrial warehouse somewhere.  It is this combination of glitzy and gritty that exemplifies the sound and style of The Kickaways. ShowYrTeeth is a tantalizing mixture of glam with a touch of 'the ultra-violence.'

Van Ackerman from the Cincinnati Arts Association is in the studio with our Jim Stump to preview some of the unique shows coming to the Aronoff Center through the end of the year, including The Priests, Sweet Honey in the Rock, and Mannheim Steamroller.

Lee Hay plays “Amazing Grace,” performed by the Cincinnati Caledonian Pipes and Drums, from their 2006 CD New Beginnings.

ADM: A Delicate Motor

Nov 5, 2013

I have a very love-hate relationship with technology.  On one hand, it is an amazing tool that has revolutionized how we view the world and each other.  It has allowed us to create amazing new things and paved the way for new inventions that can make the world a better, safer and healthier place.

However, it is so dreadfully easy to become dependent upon it that, when it fails, we can find ourselves virtually crippled and sitting in the dark, waiting for the lights to come back on.

Ironfest IV Facebook event page

Tonight is the opening of Ironfest IV at The Southgate House Revival.

Ironfest is an all-out, no-holds-barred local band rock-fest put together in honor of the late "Iron" Mike Davidson who was a huge supporter of, and contributor to, the local music scene.

The 2-day event features 35 bands, all from the Greater Cincinnati community who have come together to pay tribute to Mike and to help raise money for his family.

As a special Halloween treat, from the forthcoming album Dead in Ohio, here is "Predisposed," a single from Cincinnati's Formerly Ghosts.

A one-hour special featuring the King of Cincinnati Boogie Woogie, Ricky Nye.  He recently came into our studio and talked with Lee Hay about the upcoming 14th Annual Blues & Boogie Piano Summit at the Southgate House Revival on Saturday, November 9th.  Ricky discussed his blues background, mentoring young players, his 2014 European concert tour, and some of the musicians who'll be at this year's Piano Summit.  The special airs this Saturday night, 11/2, from 11pm-midnight.  Lots of music, too!

In September of 2012, Caitin Behle of Each Note Secure called The Yugos “one of the most fun bands in Cincinnati.”  Now, just over a year later, that title appears to still be securely in their hands.

The Yugos’ second album, Life is Awesome and Then You Live Forever from Best Friend Records, is a bouncy, rollicking bombastic and rhythmic party full of good times, positive energy and great music.

Gazer: Phone Commercial

Oct 12, 2013
gazerohio.bandcamp.com

Gazer describes themselves as “a high-strung, Cincinnati-based noise punk band.”  And although that statement is true, there is a lot, musically, that separates them from other bands that I would consider “Cincinnati-based noise-punk” like Mardou or Smoke Signals….

Xavier University Music Series opens its 37th season

Oct 12, 2013

It’s time for the 37th anniversary season of the Xavier University Music Series, and new coordinator Polina Bespalko visits with our Frank Johnson to preview the upcoming year of classical piano, classical guitar and swing music concerts.

Lee Hay is on the phone with Georgette Jones, the daughter of country music royalty – George Jones and Tammy Wynette. She’s a singer and recording artist who will be performing at Bobby Mackey’s Music World on October 19. She talks about her parents, her own music, and what concert-goers can expect when she’s singing on stage.

Magnolia Mountain is a Jack Daniel’s and Budweiser band in a town made for craft brew and Buffalo Trace -- and that seems to be just fine by them.

While in town for the Constella Festival, jazz legend Jimmy Heath conducted a master class at the School for Creative and Performing Arts. Here is a video of that class for those who were unable to make it:

JIMMY HEATH MASTER CLASS AT SCPA

This week’s Blues show will feature a mix of new and archival blues recordings. Some of the new releases this year include Paul Allen, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and Amos Lee.  The show ends with some favorites by Jeff Black, the Allman Brothers, and local guitar wizard Scotty Anderson.

This week’s Blues show starts off with a new song from German musician Tony Hudspeth called “Good Times.”

Kudos to Steeplejack Music in Germany for sending us his cd.  The rest of the program features some of my personal favorites like “Nite Mist Blues” by the Monty Alexander Trio, plus Chet Baker and Johnny Adams.
