Countdown To TV Cancellations

Anderson Township native Sam Straley was a cast member in 'The Kids Are Alright,' which ABC canceled Friday.

Updated 4 p.m. Friday May 10: It's one and done for ABC's The Kids Are Alright, the ensemble comedy with Anderson Township native Sam Straley, Variety reports.

ABC also canceled The Fix, ABC's legal drama from Marcia Clark, former Los Angeles district attorney, as networks finalize their fall TV lineups to be announced next week.

Kids creator Tim Doyle announced the cancellation Friday on Twitter: "The Kids Are Alright is dead. I just got the call. Goodbye."

Shortly after Straley tweeted: "So no Season 2 for us - but forever grateful for the best opportunity I’ve had thus far and for the best TV family I guy could ask for. Much love and many thanks to the entire team for all they’ve taught me. Love you."

Straley, a 2013 Anderson High School graduate, played the oldest son of Mike and Peggy Cleary (Michael Cudlitz, Mary McCormack) in a sitcom about a 1970s Catholic family with eight boys. It was quickly given a full-season order last fall after strong ratings for the first several episodes.

Straley is the grandson of Roger Grooms, a local theater actor-director, movie critic and Anderson High School teacher who died in 2006. "My grandpa would take me to films growing up. That's when I knew that this is what I want to do," Straley told me when he visited WVXU last November.
